IAMCR protests the closing of Greek public service broadcaster
IAMCR President, Janet Wasko, sent a letter to Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister of Greece, regarding the sudden closure of the public service broadcaster, ERT. In her letter she underlined the importance of public service media in democratic societies and urged the prime minister to "immediately reverse this decision, allowing Greek and other affected citizens living in the country and abroad to receive independent and quality information in this important period in Greek history."
IAMCR @ ICA on 20 June
As is customary, IAMCR will host a special panel at the International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference. This year's panel will focus on the theme of IAMCR's own conference that begins in Dublin on 25 June, a short distance and a few days away.
“Crises, ‘Creative Destruction’ and the Global Power and Communication Orders”, the Dublin theme and the title of the panel, centres on whether and how the current economic crisis and its attendant gales of "creative destruction" may serve to reshape geo-political and communication orders.
Call for proposals to hold future IAMCR conferences
The IAMCR Executive Board and International Council will consider proposals for hosting and organization of future IAMCR conferences from 2015 onwards. Expressions of interest should be submitted to the Executive Board by June 17, 2013. IAMCR conferences are major opportunities to show the know-how and promote the activities of the organizing institution(s) and to foster the energy and creativity around a large international project.
Karol Jakubowicz
It is with deep sorrow that we report the death of Polish professor and journalist Karol Jakubowicz, who passed away April 28th.
Karol was an active IAMCR member for many years and contributed greatly to our meetings and discussions. He was a leading expert on European media and held many prominent positions. He led committees on media issues at the Council of Europe and UNESCO, and served as Director of the Polish Television. Karol was also an adviser on broadcast media laws to governments, NGOs and international organizations, including the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
We are currently discussing a memorial session commemorating Karol's work at the IAMCR Dublin conference.
IAMCR joins Women Make the News 2013
On the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), IAMCR joins UNESCO and other international and regional media organizations to launch the annual Women Make the News (WMN) initiative, under the theme “Towards a Global Alliance on Media and Gender”.
We are inviting editors-in-chief of newspapers, radio, television on and offline to join UNESCO’s initiative, and to produce special supplements/programmes on these topics and/or to entrust women journalists and reporters with editorial responsibility for the newsroom for a limited period over the duration of the WMN initiative.
New journal of the Political Economy Section
The Political Economy Section of IAMCR is establishing a new journal with the first issue to be published on 1 May 2013. Political Economy of Communication will be an online open access academic publication.
The journal will publish peer reviewed articles that are delivered within the Political Economy section's sessions at IAMCR conferences. The journal is also open, in special cases, to ground-breaking contributions from non-section members.
IAMCR 2012 election results
The results of the elections for IAMCR's Executive Board and for the elected members of the association's International Council have been announced. The International Council also includes one representative of each of the association's fifteen sections. Their names will be announced later.
The new Executive Board and International Council held their first meetings on 20 July.
Mapping Communication Associations
ECREA, IAMCR and ICA have launched a joint online inventory of communication associations worldwide. All communication associations are invited to create an entry in the database.
As more associations make themselves known, the database will gradually grow into the first ever searchable database of communication associations. At this stage, the database is publicly accessible and can be navigated either by browsing or using keywords.
The "Mapping Communication Associations" website is hosted by Université Libre de Bruxelles and can be found here.
IAMCR @ ICA2012
Every year IAMCR sponsors a panel at the conference of the International Communication Association (ICA).
This year ICA's conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona from 24 to 28 May and the IAMCR panel was held on Friday 25 May with the title "Critical approaches to Communication and Community".
Proposal to amend IAMCR's statutes and by-laws
The Legal Committee of IAMCR was requested by the International Council and the President to draft the changes in the statutes and the by-laws needed to enact Electronic Voting for the IAMCR Executive Board and the elected members of the International Council in the future. The President of IAMCR, Annabelle Sreberny, will bring these changes to the General Assembly in Durban.
