Newsletter May 2008, Vol. 18/1 President's Column In 2007, I took the difficult decision not to run for a second term as IAMCR President as all of you know. Judging from the statements by those nominated for the Presidency and other positions, there is a very large amount of enthusiasm, energy and commitment to IAMCR on the part of all those who have been nominated. I look forward to ensuring the smoothest possible handover to those who are announced as the successful candidates when we meet in Stockholm. I suppose that there was a danger that having decided to step away from the very challenging role as President of IAMCR, there was a risk that my energies would begin to be directed to other things during the last of my four years as President. I hope that members do not feel that this happened. I believe we can have a healthy organisation without the need for those who take on commitments to do so for more than one term. I do assure you that I will work after to July in my role as Past President to make sure the transition is smooth. Over the past four years, IAMCR has become stronger and more widely recognised for all its contributions. It is the Association representing media and communication scholars worldwide and we do so, not just in the academy, but outside it as well. Our profile with regional associations has increased and our profile within UNESCO has become much more visible. We have been encouraged and invited to participate with UNESCO in planning their forward looking research agenda. Our membership has grown from the dip we experienced at the beginning of my term of office and our finances are in good order. Of course, this is not enough. We must continue to build our research profile, our capacity to interest new scholars, and our ability to work with others active in a va-riety of social movements. The study of media and communication yields new insights that can and should be applied to strengthen activities of others whether they are concerned with gender, human rights, poverty or other pressing issues. It is my honour and privilege to have served as President – to July 2008. It is thanks to the ongoing work of the members of the Ex-ecutive Board and the International Council as well as Working Group Chairs, (and all the local organisers of our conferences in Taipei, Cairo, Paris and now Stockholm), that I have managed to do what became possible over the past four years. My wish for IAMCR is that we continue to foster cooperation of many kinds that will lead to stronger research, stronger teaching and training in our field, and active pursuit of specific and high priority policy agendas. A list of initiatives in which I have been directly involved over the past year follows to let members know what has been happening. These can be taken forward and others can be put in their place. Whatever the future holds for IAMCR, I thank all members of IAMCR for your support during my time in office. Best wishes, Robin Professor Robin Mansell
