Cairo 2006 Highlights

Cairo 2006IAMCR's Annual Conference took place in Cairo (Egypt) from 23-28 July 2006. This year's Conference was organized by the Journalism and Mass Communication department of the American University in Cairo. It's theme, Knowledge Societies for All: Media and Communication Strategies, was timely and very important because it signals the need to build a bridge between the emerging knowledge societies of developed and less developed regions.

Cairo Opening Plenary Session Speech

Cairo 2006Fatma Alloo, a founder of the Tanzania Media Women's Association (TAMWA) made the inaugural speech at the Opening Plenary Session of IAMCR's 2006 Annual Conference in Cairo on 24 July. In her presentation, Knowledge Societies for All: Media and Communication Strategies, Alloo discussed ICT access affordability, infrastructure, government regulation in Africa, as well as the role of content, literacy and language in the process of empowering people.

The conference theme ‘Knowledge Societies for All’ is timely, interesting and provocative. It is timely because we know that many are still excluded from modern conceptions of knowledge societies, however defined. It is interesting because we are witnessing substantial growth in the numbers of researchers and practitioners who are concerned about the role of the media and the way older and newer information and communication technologies are becoming integrated in some people’s lives. It is provocative because the kinds of knowledge societies that are being fostered today are contested and they are not yet inclusive of all.

In recent years democratic theory has taken a deliberative turn and one central question that needs to be answered is how to connect face-to-face conversations and deliberations in particular forums to broader discussions in the larger society. Working within the cutting edges of deliberative theories, this book surveys the role of the mass media in the deliberative system and investigates, through a set of empirical cases, a range of key problems in the media arena: the interplay between arguing and strategic maneuvering; public demands for accountability; emotional appeal for deliberation; tensions between agonistic and diplomatic deliberation; and the public construction of general claims.
