Cairo 2006 Highlights
IAMCR's Annual Conference took place in Cairo (Egypt) from 23-28 July 2006. This year's Conference was organized by the Journalism and Mass Communication department of the American University in Cairo. It's theme, Knowledge Societies for All: Media and Communication Strategies, was timely and very important because it signals the need to build a bridge between the emerging knowledge societies of developed and less developed regions.

IAMCR President’s Welcome
I extend a very warm invitation to you to attend IAMCR’s 2006 conference, 23-28 July in Cairo.
The conference theme ‘Knowledge Societies for All’ is timely, interesting and provocative. It is timely because we know that many are still excluded from modern conceptions of knowledge societies, however defined. It is interesting because we are witnessing substantial growth in the numbers of researchers and practitioners who are concerned about the role of the media and the way older and newer information and communication technologies are becoming integrated in some people’s lives. It is provocative because the kinds of knowledge societies that are being fostered today are contested and they are not yet inclusive of all.
Conference Chair's Welcome

Deliberation, the Media and Political Talk
Rousiley C. Maia
New book by IAMCR member
In recent years democratic theory has taken a deliberative turn and one central question that needs to be answered is how to connect face-to-face conversations and deliberations in particular forums to broader discussions in the larger society. Working within the cutting edges of deliberative theories, this book surveys the role of the mass media in the deliberative system and investigates, through a set of empirical cases, a range of key problems in the media arena: the interplay between arguing and strategic maneuvering; public demands for accountability; emotional appeal for deliberation; tensions between agonistic and diplomatic deliberation; and the public construction of general claims.
