Les origines de l’AIERI sont contemporaines de celles de l’Unesco, dont, dès 1946, le « Comité sur les Besoins techniques dans les Communications de Masse » rédige un projet pour la création d’un « Institut International de la Presse et de l’Information » destiné à promouvoir la formation des journalistes et l’étude des problèmes de la presse dans le monde entier.
